Re: [Marxism] Skype
Just to toss in an oppositional voice, I'd strongly recommend *not* using
Skype.
While Skype runs on GNU/Linux, it is not open source code software.
Even worse, Skype runs on a proprietary, non-standard protocol. As such, if
Skype ever gets really big, you can expect to be raked over the coals due to
Skype owning the protocol and monopolies acting like monopolies do.
There are many other services directly equivalent to Skype which run on
public, open standards which level the playing field to all competitors.
Doing voice/phone over the Internet Protocol is not rocket science -- this
stuff is routine. There's absolutely no sense in locking one's self into some
company's proprietary system.
An Internet search for "open voip" will no doubt turn up many companies
doing similar things.
One which I've used in the past (standard disclaimers: no financial
interest in them, blah-blah-blah) which also runs on GNU/Linux, Macs, and
Windows is <http://openwengo.com/>.
In solidarity.
