Re: [Marxism] George Galloway Redux
Sad to report that Galloway has made a monstrous mistake in appearing on a
popular reality TV show here in the UK. Called Celebrity Big Brother, it places
ten or so celebrities together in a house for three weeks, where their every
movement, conversation, etc., is televised and out of which each is evicted at
regular intervals. Three are nominated for eviction by their fellow housemates
and the result is voted upon by viewers phoning in.
During their stay the housemates are given tasks to perform, which they must
if they are to avoid instant eviction. These are exercises in humiliation and
Galloway has up to now had to pretend to be a cat, stay under a box for a
period of time and perform an impersonation of Elvis.
His appearance has provided ammunition to the establishment and his political
enemies both inside and outside Parliament. Petitions have been drawn up by
his constituents in Bethnal Green, unhappy that their MP has abandoned them for
3 weeks.
Even Galloway's closest comrades, whom he did not even consult before going
on to the show, have found it hard to defend him. There is no doubt that he's
put his party, RESPECT, back, as well as the movement in its entirety.
Galloway maintained that he would talk about the war and Palestine on the
show, exploiting the fact he would be able to reach so many people. However,
CH4,
the network behind it, have bleeped or edited out every political statement
Galloway has made thus far.
Each of the housemates is being paid handsomely to appear on the show and
Galloway has pledged his fee to a Palestinian charity, Interpal. Surprise,
surprise, the US government has asked its British counterpart to shut this
charity
down, accusing it of funding terrorism.
The other celebrities appearing with Galloway are a mixed bag of the C-list
variety. US comrades may recognise among them Dennis Rodman and Tracy Bingham.
