We have to keep in mind that the hardcore base in the
electorate for a Republican president runs normally
about 35-40%. And I think that's a figure that has
been pretty stable for the last generation or two.
What is remarkable, is that for several months
following Katrina, Bush's poll ratings began to
drop in the low 30s which means that even
some of his hardcore base was beginning
to drift away. In lieu of the fact that there have
been any Katrina-size disasters for the past
couple of months and with the continuing slow
recovery of the economy, it should come as
no surprise that his poll ratings have begun
to inch upwards again. By most historical standards,
his poll ratings are still quite anemic for a
second term president.
