[Marxism] flyer for MLK day

something my group put out for the MLK day parade here in LA
-josh

Let's remember the real Martin Luther King Jr.
Who if he were with us today would be helping us organize to fight
racism, war, inequality and oppression!

The politicians and corporations want us to believe that Martin Luther
King Jr. got rid of racism and left us with a society that is
basically perfect, in which racism, unjust wars and oppression don't
exist any more. This way they can justify continuing to make record
profits and wage war at the expense of our communities.

But the reality is that if MLK were alive he would be helping us
organize a fight to bring our sons and daughters back from Iraq, a
fight for good jobs, a fight against racist cops and police brutality
and a fight to overturn a racist criminal "justice" system. He would
call the conditions we are living under outrageously unjust and he
would be outraged at those who use his name to justify policies that
create misery for black people and poor people.

LET'S TELL OUR FAMILIES, FRIENDS AND CO-WORKERS THAT MLK Jr. was:

A fighter against a system that's addicted to putting profits before
human needs:
"You can't talk about solving the economic problem of the Negro
without talking about billions of dollars. You can't talk about ending
the slums without first saying profit must be taken out of slums ....
we are treading in difficult water, because it really means that we
are saying that something is wrong... with capitalism.... There must
be a better distribution of wealth and maybe America must move toward
a democratic socialism." (Frogmore, S.C. November 14, 1966.)

A fighter against the wars the rulers of the United States start and
continue in the interests of their profits:
(From a 1967 speech:) "As I walked among the desperate, rejected,
angry young men, I have told them that Molotov cocktails and rifles
would not solve their problems … [but also] I knew that I could never
again raise my voice against the violence of the oppressed in the
ghettos without first having spoken clearly to the greatest purveyor
of violence in the world today: my own government."

Progressive Alliance, the organization that wrote this flyer, fights
for a society that would put people's needs before the needs of the
corporations and politicians. We think it is possible to have a
democratic world without racism, inequality and oppression, which
would be called socialism, but that to get there working people have
to organize and fight. If you like what you see here and want to get
