I just got back from being in Chile for three weeks yesterday. Quick
comments:
Political ads on TV are restricted by law to two 15-minute periods every
day. Candidates pay alot of money to TV networks to buy a few minutes of
ad time in that period. I don't speak Spanish, but one of the times I
asked what was being said, my sister told me that Bachelet was talking
about cracking down on crime. Didn't leave a good impression on me.
The main communist party of Chile (I don't remember their name) called
for a boycott of the election, claiming both candidates were the same.
My brother-in-law told me that the groups of kids they have campaigning
for one candidate or another are paid and "don't vote anyway."
I saw at least three graffitis of swastikas crossed out and "NAZIS NO"
or some such written.
In one very poor town I passed through, the entire thing was covered
with posters from the _last_ presidential election for the communist
candidate. But there were also many from the right-wing candidate who
was an ally of Pinochet.
As far as I can tell, _everyone_ hates Bush.
