My confusion may still originate in my inability to see this as having
any connection to the evolution of radicalism in the period. Someone
said that it had come out of work with "prisoners." Their bank jobs
certainly had a professional look to them.
We all know that the SLA claimed to be political...as did the James
Gang. And the claim that the James Boys were striking a blow against
the banks or the railroads made them very useful supporters and
apologists. And maybe Frank and Jesse might have actually believed it
themselves from time to time.
But I wouldn't see them primarily as a political group.
