[Marxism] FTA's Black reps?

On Mon, 9 Jan 2006 16:39:03 GMT acpollack2 asked
"Today labourstart.org had the item below. Anyone
familiar enough with the FTA's history to know how the
position of "Negro representative" got created and
what they did? Note also the fight to eliminate
north-south wage differentials (an obviously
overlapping issue).

FTA stands for Food, Tobacco, Agricultural and
Allied Workers. It was primarily in the South with
strngth in North Carolina. It was a victim of the
anti-Communist campaign within the CIO.
I am not familiar with the specifics in FTA. But
during that period, the CP argued that Negto workers
had specific problems that needed specific solutions.
There were many articles in Political Affairs on this
theme. If you have the time, look thru Political
Affairs. Also the FTA had a newspaper which is
probably archived somewhere. A few years later, this
whole campaign led to the formation of a large
organization called the National Negro Labor Council
in which Coleman Young, a Communist at the time and
Later Mayor of Detroit, played an active role.
