(1) a complex of different classes and groups, led essentially by the
peasants and urban-residing Indians or Mestizos. There are even
parts of the local bourgeoisies (in the most "classical" sense of the
word) behind him. And, please never forget this when talking about
an LA development in the 21st century, Hugo Chávez and the Venezuelan
revolution.

(2) (a) no (b) no: imperialism wants Bolivia to remain as the Congo
of South America (source of raw materials for use abroad, either in
California -by way of Argentina and Chile-, in Argentina or in
Brazil), and they have very good reasons to do so: the
industrialization of Bolivia is the main piece in the reorganization
of South America on new, strong, bases. This, Chávez understands
very well. And, er, so do I; I am preparing a book on the
geopolitics of the industrialization of South America which explains
why is it that Bolivia is such a bone of contention (same can be
said, due to different reasons, of Colombia)..

Jorge Abelardo Ramos in "Historia de la Nación Latinoamericana"
Quoting Bolivian source. Not handy now. Will seek.

But, dear RR man, if you come to think of it, it's just a matter of
common sense.

Same things happened in Argentina after 1945. Source here are the
medical records of the Army, and the % of rejection due to "low
Pinet" indexes, etc. In Argentina, military service was a civil duty
that almost no male citizen of 20 (later on, 18) could dodge easily.
So that these records provide a very good graph of the issue. Not
exactly malnutrition but TBC was the issue here. TBC, however, is
linked to malnutrition, of course.

In fact, one of the reasons behind Arg military nationalism during
the 30s and 40s was the _technical_ verification of such facts. In
those years, a saying passed on from military language to everyday
language: "no da el piné", that is "does not meet the Pinet index",
meaning "this should be rejected".
