Re: [Marxism] re: translation of Ahmadinejad

I'm quite sure that your last point is correct, that Zionist leaders
discouraged emigration to the U.S. etc. As for your other points, the Zionist
lobby was not so strong at the time, and the Truman Administration decided to
support Israel for a number of reasons, including but not primarily Zionist
pressure; my point about the lack of public discussion on the Holocaust is
absolutely correct; and of course the idea that the imperialists would be moved
by "guilt," an oft-stated notion picked up by the Iranian president, is
unlikely, and is without evidence. I don't have my complete library at my
disposal at the moment, but I just picked up Peter Novick's "The Holocaust in
American Life," and I'd refer you to pages 71 ff.

That's not true at all. The exact opposite is true. The organized
Zionist lobby in the US pushed hard on Truman to support Israel. There
is a well-know quote by Truman, something to the extent that he has to
support the Jewish claim because they are a part of the voting
constituency whereas the Palestinians are not. Also I remember clearly
reading that Zionist leaders instructed the American Zionists not to
push the government to let Jews emigrate to the US, because that would
hurt the aims of Zionism to create a viable Jewish state in Palestine.
