I think we should be in no doubt that the drunken crowds of people that
attacked individuals in Sydney and called for the explusion of all non-white
foreigners from 'their land' represent mainstream white ideology in
Australia. People used to a high standard of living in a capitalist country
where profits are reaped from imperialism, and where ethnic minorities have
always been an underclass, will naturally react violently when they believe
that a massive influx of non-white peoples is occurring. As the social
democratic contract is being torn up by their government, white Australia
will turn to advocating and practicing systematic racist violence to protect
its privilege; in short, imperialism comes home. At the moment, much of this
work is being done by the government, but when the latter seems to weaken in
its resolve (after all, it must), leave it to the white working class to
take up the slack.

Socialists in Australia have been, and should, recognise that the
self-defense and advocacy of immigrant, ethnic minority, and
anti-imperialist interests is in the forefront of struggle there.
