Theres' a consolidated thread on the GLW list which explores the riots in the 
context of the gang bang culture in the rugby clubs and the role of the NSW 
ALP. While also pointing out how the response to this pogram varies from the 
govenrment's approach to the Macquarie Fields and Redfern riots.

It also touches on the traditional beach cultures as explored in such films and 
books as "Puberty Blues" as the riot occurred in the grounds of the local Surf 
Life Saving Club...although the club has issued a pretty considerate press 
release.

Also the NSW government has utilized the riot to expand in police powers and 
tactical response units.

Even before the Iraq war NSW's govenrmet in tandem with the radio shock jocks 
and the gutter press ran a major racist campaign against "Leboes" when three 
youths from taht community  were charged and later convicted of the rape of a 
young woman.

The new sedition laws have simply supplied more fodder. Also the small  fascist 
formations -- suhc as Jim Saleem's --were involved in these events.
