I don't know rr, I think Fred did us a favor by laying out what the stakes are,
or the line up of forces in a very concise manner. "The class struggle" aside,
in this developing country, is there or isn't there a more rightwing attack on
Lula? If so, what importance is it? Is the US tired of working to keep Lula in
line if there are better candidates available closer to the overt US position
in Latin America? If not, why the fuss? I think Fred raises a lot of the right
questions, even if the implication is something you and I may disagree with him
on.
Fred supposes this is the case even though he poses it as a question. I think
the comparison to Allende is incorrect, whoever made it, because the
radicalization that occurred immediatly after the PT election has faded into
demoralization and complacency. Lula has done his job, and I believe is still
do his job, the one he promised Wall Stree before his election. He has acted,
and continues to act as a stablizing influence, not a radicalizing one, but one
that needs to prove it's independence from the US in order to better do what it
needs to tame the class struggle further.
We should oppose, of course, any US interference in Brazils affairs, that should
go without saying. Does this mean political support to Lula? Does mean
projecting Lula as another Chavez? I don't think so. It means we pay attention
to what's going on in Brazil. We side with the working class and whoever is on
our class brothers and sisters side.
