[Marxism] Pilger interviews vegetarian butcher

This little dialogue, from an interview John Pilger conducted with British
Tory foreign minister Alan Clark ten years or so ago, is pertinent to the
vegetarianism thread, in that it shows that concern for animsl does not
equal a concern for us human animals. This conversation was sampled to good
effect by the excellent English Pakistani rap group Fun>da>Mental about ten
years ago.

Obviously, vegetarians should not simply ally themselves with any social
force or group that advocates animal rights. The system they support, for a
start, is reponsible for the industrial murder of animals, and Clark et al's
'humanity' towards animals, in the context of their woder class and
political affiliations, is indeed utopian and moralistic.

(NB The subject of Pilger's initial question was on british arms sales to
the fascist killers in Indonesia)

JP: "Did it bother you personally when you were the minister responsible
that British equipment was causing such mayhem and human suffering, albeit
to a set of foreigners?

AC: "No, not in the slightest. It never entered my head."

JP: "You didn?t lose sleep over it?"

AC: "No."

JP: I ask the question because I read that you were a vegetarian and you are
seriously concerned about the way animals are killed?"

AC: "Yeah."

JP: "Doesn?t that concern extend to the way humans, albeit foreigners, are
killed?"

AC: "Curiously not."
