[Marxism] Chavez sweeps Venezuelan elections
Without being there, the points M. Lebowitz brought up were on my mind as well.
Clearly, and without doubt, there is a complacency among many of the
revolutions supporters. I think this was in part by the parties of the
revolution rather boastful statements that they were going to trounce the
opposition, giving supporters a sort of "I'll sleep late this morning then"
attitude.
The other part is that there seems to be a disconnect among Chavistas and other
supporters of the revolution between the real stuff on the ground they are
involved in on a day-to-day basis (all mandated by the Bolivarian Constitution,
BTW) and this "legislature thing" whose members simply don't necessarily arise
or relate to this base.
Libowitz's point about candidates being "parachuted" in makes sense and is has
been a problem in the last two national elecitons...lot's of democracy at the
base, little at top in the parties, especially Chavez's own party.
I think some sharp revolutionary activists ought to put a word in Chavez's ear
about connecting the dots between the masses and the electoral representatives
of the Bolivarian Revolution. Clearly this is NOT happening.
