Where it's strongest, organized labor has become almost inextricably
bound up in the Democratic party and the connections are strongest where
the Democrats can offer the most. It's precisely the minority status of
the Democrats and the small scale of unionization that may shape this
South Carolina experiment into something far more positive than it would
be someplace like Chicago...or even Cincinnati.
Hopefully, it will assume the same shadings as the civil rights
movement.
This could actually achieve serious proportions someplace like
Charleston.
