Oh ok I hadn't seen you had written this email - you don't have to
respond my last post then obviously. I agree about the critiques of
the ISO - I was using them as an example. Your arguments make sense
but I am still not convinced that focusing on left regroupment in the
absence of the growth of a significant social movement can be fruitful
- I think those of us who are active here should spend our time trying
to find ways to be _successful_ - and if in concrete ways working with
other groups or fusions make sense around the axis of moving towards
success and relevance, than so be it. But in my experience as a
socialist doing community organizing in the immigrant community in
L.A. there are few groups that share any interest in even doing this
kind of work, let alone in doing it independent of the union and
non-profit and Democratic Party bureaucracies.
In any case, I realize I am a white male, as an activist in a milieu
of working class people of color I seriously empathize with the
aversion to fusing with a group dominated by old, middle class white
men which seems to be the majority of the leadership of the U.S. hard
left today. Unless they have a deep respect and empathy for those
below them in race, class and gender hierarchies, but then why haven't
they oriented towards working class communities and built a collective
leadership around those communities?
Josh
