Mr. Bustelo writes that the fundamental problem w/ a grp like the
CWI is:
1.Why is it a separate group, like the ISO or SParts,
2.The answer is most often that under guise of "Leninist Party", they seek
to project a specific analysis of another country and time onto a different
country and time, while disregarding *existing* revoluntionary mov'ts which
had brought together disparate rev. forces into a systematic expression of
goals of mass social mov'ts. The example he gives is the SBB in Nicaragua.
To start w/, it has to be mentioned that the CWI did operate w/in
the British Labor party as the Militant Tendency until the New Labor
period, when left were either expelled or left, as the Labor party had
completely prohibited any expression of any prog thought, like the
Democrats or Rethuglicans here. Also, I do agree w/ mr. Bustelo's
assessment of the CWI, especially interms of it's attitude toward Cuba and
Nicaragua, as well as the RESPECT mov't, and does exhibit this sectarianism
endemic to all Marxiam grps.
Hoever, especially w/ the example Mr. Bustelo cites, we need to
remember that at the time the SBB were pulling their antics (1977), the
FSLN had been performing the function of uniting the disparate
revolutionary mov't into a single united umbrella mov't which fought
against the root cause of the many problems (class based society manifested
by capitalism, imperialism, and semi-feudalism) for about a decade. In
contrast, in the US (much, much more so) and the UK (to a lesser extent),
there exists no such mov't which plays the role the FSLN, RSDLP, or J26
mov'ts did in Nicaragua, Eurasia, and Cuba. Furthermore, in a place where
there does exist such a rev. mov't, a Marxian Soc. grp has to operate w/in
that mov't, albeit they could act as a current or faction W/IN the
*overall* rev. mov't
In the US, there exist AI, AW, UHC, LU, ES, GLBT, WL, UA mov'ts, they
are all disparate and completely un-united. In addition most don't have a
goal of eradicating the class based root of social, economic and politcal
discord (capitalism and imperialism). B/c they lack this dialectical
understanding, often they don't act in solidarity w/ each other (the LU's
don't act in solidarity w/ AI's and AW's and UHC's, the WL's don't
solidarize w/ ES's, UHC's etc). This is true to a lesser extent in UK,
mainly b/c there wansn't the conscious Mccarthyite offensive of the
Bouzhies to wipe out such a dialectical understanding of all the prog mov't
and people in general. One task of any Marxian grp is to bring each of
these movts under a united revolutionary umbrella force whose goal is to
destroy the class based system which cases all these problems.
Thus right now, we can't *yet say that just b/c a marxist grp. exists
as a separate entity, that it is acting outside of the mass mov't, b/c,
esp. in the US, there exists no such mov't to act outside of, as there was
in Nicaragua, Eurasia, and Cuba, as the FSLN, RSDLP, and J26 played. Thus,
in the process of integrating all the disparate prog, revolutionary mov'ts,
any marxist needs a groups s/he can go to to discuss and furhter understand
the dialectical materialist understanding which doesn't yet exist in the
prog mov'ts.
Here is an example. In Afghanistan, if there was a grp of Communist
oriented individuals, they should attempt to form an umbrella mov't w/ the
Revolutionary Association of AFghan Women, (not trying to strip away
members or other such SBB Morenoist antics). The RAWA right now doesn't yet
have a conscious explicit stated understanding of the DiMat understanding
of the root causes, although w/ them it is latent, and could be on the
verge of coming out, and they also don't endorse class oppression. But b/c
the Rawa doesn't yet discuss it openly, (and probably understandably due to
the Afghan civil war are turned off by the word "communism"), the Afghan
Communists need a forum to discuss their ideas. If the RAWA is open such a
forum conducted w/in their group, the Communists *HAVE to do it W/IN Rawa*.
If not, they need to do it outside, until such an umbrella mov't exists,
and which has a shared goal of eradicating the root cause of entire world's
problems, class division and dominiation, in the form of capitalism,
colonialism, imperilism, feudalism, and inequality.
