Obviously, social factors can be studied within the known parameters,
but nobody part of the society being studied--part of the species that
is being studied--can step out of it and develop a detached experimental
perspective.

And it seems quite clear that people in large groups are far less
predictable than individuals.  When I know individual people well
enough, I can predict roughly how they're going to respond to things,

However, absolutely any decision by groups of individuals can go one of
two ways.  People can discuss and learn from the best points made or
they can simply be either politely deferential to, or terrified by the
lowest common denominator and be herded.  How many times have we all
seen individually smart and decent people voted to shoot themselves in
the collective foot?  And it doesn't matter how important the issue is.
And the same group of individuals can act one way on Monday morning and
do the opposite on Monday afternoon.

The notion that human behavior is predictable on the scale of nation,
class or species is nothing but a pure act of faith is we can't predict
human behaviors in government bodies, academic departments, unions, or
"revolutionary parties."

Of course, if it were otherwise, wouldn't human freedom itself be a
farce?
