[Marxism] Yale University: Spring of 1970

A present Yale student sent a questionnaire to members of the class of 1970 asking what it was like on campus during the height of the antiwar movement and the Black Panther Party demonstrations of May 1-3, 1970.

Despite some minor errors (misspelling Bobby Seale's name) and the Christmas bombing of 1972 (it was of North Vietnam, not Cambodia—it is clear from the context that the writer repeated a word already in his mind), this is a very valuable description of the actions and emotions at one of the U.S.'s most prestigious universities over the Vietnam War.

The flavor of Bart Whiteman's 3,300 word commentary makes it clear why U.S. imperialism does not want a similar repetition over Iraq. Although Whiteman is puzzled over the absence of a similar student response to Iraq, there is no doubt that college students are also beginning to assimilate the negative results of the Iraq war, and wiser imperialist heads than Bush and Chaney are beginning to recognize the potential disastrous long-term effects from the present war both at home and abroad. They are creating a new Iraq syndrome to match and even blend in with the so-called Vietnam syndrome.
