Mark don't you think Chants Democratic can also be taken as a critique
of the white working class - showing the connections between the early
movement of skilled/artisan workers and pro-slavery, bigoted
Democratic party politics in New York? And I think the thesis and the
method of the book are really good, a good example of the way
class-consciousness is a cultural phenomena specific to a time and
place. The notion of "working class republicanism" is I think the
best characterization of the culture of the workers movement in the
19th century and maybe even up through the 20th. Wilentz is an
academic, not an activist, and while it's lamentable he has such bad
politics his academic work can be appreciated somewhat separately...
