RE: [Marxism] Gordon S. Wood on Sean Wilentz
As part of his recent work, Sean Wilentz reviewed David Reynold's book
on John Brown (on H-SLAVERY). Wilentz missed some of the real
problematic areas of the book but his concern wasn't really with the
book.
Rather, he focused on John Brown as an advocate of violence whose raid
on Harpers Ferry actually retarded the peaceful electoral victories of
the antislavery movement. In short, the Civil War was the result of a
"blundering generation" that had failed to exercise the American genius
for compromise....
Many of these ideas, btw, were implicit in his CHANTS DEMOCRATIC! (do a
double-take on the title).
Solidarity!
