[Marxism] Re: Defeat For Blair
Just having finished a short piece for New Interventions stating that all
the rebellions in parliament against Blair have come to nought, this goes
and happens!!
Having talked to pals with a bit more knowledge of Labour Party affairs than
I, it is legitimate to say that this could be the start of the end of the
road for Blair. The way that he says those who opposed him are effectively
betraying him and supporting terrorism is going to upset people in the
Parliamentary Labour Party, and I think that quite a few people who have
been toadying supporters of Blair are thinking of dumping him. Rats leaving
a sinking ship, or at least considering it. When Blair really looks like
he's going, all the knives will come out, and every toady will rapidly stab
him in the back. How soon the 'Ditch Blair Project' will come into the open,
I don't know. But it may not be long.
Other list comrades are right in saying that under Gordon Brown, Labour will
be Blairite. This is quite right. Brown hasn't made a squeak of criticism of
Blair, whilst other cabinet ministers have occasionally said the odd
criticism, or inferred criticism to friends in the press. Brown is fully
behind privatisation and similar schemes, and wants to cut thousand more
public sector jobs. He is a confirmed Atlanticist, very hostile to Europe,
although whether he'd be such a creep towards US leaders I'm not sure.
A Brownite New Labour government -- which is likely to be next one in
Britain -- will be different only in detail from the Blairite ones.
