Re: [Marxism] Article on French riots

Thanks, Einde, for sending that LCR article. I had just sent the
note below to a comrade in the hope he would forward it to Murry
Smith inquiring about LCR articles and activities.
I'm very glad to see the LCR is trying to organize something.
I have to say there were some patronizing aspects of the
article; I won't deny there are real problems: the alleged attack
on the students' march seems every bit as heinous and apolitical
as the alleged attack on that old woman the mainstream media are
reporting. And the racism among many workers is no doubt as intense
as among many workers in the US. But the upsurge in the workers'
movement over the last year -- and supposedly a concurrently
reinvigorated LCR -- makes one hope a few links are possible that
weren't before.
(Two minor carping points: I hope they stop using that awful
phrase, "Another world is possible." And I find it curious the
only ones quoted at the end are professionals/upper stratum white-collar
workers.)

---------------
I thought I had Murry Smith's address but don't see it [Murry is author
of numerous articles on France in International Viewpoint.] I'm hoping he's
writing something on the rebellion in France (after 10 days, and the interviews
with participants I've seen, "riots" no longer seems appropriate; I've seen
some good quotes around discontent with lack of jobs, police harassment, etc.).

Now being a Norteamericano I know that the jump from ghetto rebellions to
working class unity is a looooooooooong process. But inquiring minds want to
know, after the resounding "No" campaign against the EU, the hugely successful
general strike in October, etc., whether anyone on the left in France has any
ideas how to forge the necessary links between a semi-resurgent workers'
movement and the rebelling youth. To take just the most immediate short-term
obligation, is anyone organizing solidarity demonstrations against police
repression?

In solidarity,
Andrew Pollack
