i forgot to say why i spoke of Gamow. i saw the list emails on Orwell,
and it made me think of Gamow's flight from the Soviet Union and his
subsequent anti-communism. a little history here:

i learned at this site, for example, that one of Gamow's condx for
taking employment at George Washington University after defection was to
be able to work with Edward Teller. Gamow did a fair amount of US
military work, which i guess is consistent somehow with his view of US
superiority..
