RE: [Marxism] Student Walkout on Nov. 2 to Protest the War; Request Comments

Josh Saxe:

I think this is one of the best initiatives I've seen the RCP take
since I became active.

David McDonald:

In Seattle and Cleveland the initiative for the November 2 walkout was
originally taken by Socialist Alternative, a Trotskyist group. That the RCP
has evidently been building this action in LA is good, of course. This
follows their having done approximately the same thing on two earlier
occasions in Seattle, both quite successful, defined as pulling out
thousands of students.

Josh:

I think what is lacking with the RCP in this is good analysis and
sense of perspective

David:

What I find lacking is not their analysis -- everybody's analysis on the
left is pretty much the same, it's an imperialist war for control of oil and
domination of the Middle East -- but the equal sign they draw between how
pissed off a person is and what s/he is willing to do politically. If you
are really angry, then you are ready for insurrection. But what if it's not
time yet for insurrection (a position I modestly endorse)? It is an attempt
to fill in the blanks with petty-bourgeois rage. That's why they give such
emotion-laden speeches and why they are prone to sudden ultraleft outbursts
of activity divorced from reality, like calling for a rally at Fort Lewis at
the I-5 overpass where the soldiers' families hang their freeway banners on
the day an entire brigade left for Iraq.
