I agree. However, it would not be a waste of time to have a clear
understanding of where did the European counterpart of the "tributary
modes of production" in Asia differ from the latter. I say the
"European counterpart" because it was, in Amin's opinion (which I
share, Jim Blaut's dissidence nonwithstanding), an aberrant
expression of the general species.

This _aberrant_ character is best demonstrated by comparing the
history of the State in Europe and China.

In order to do this effectively, Europe _as a whole_ should be
compared with China _as a whole_. You only need to see the different
history of the Chinese and "European" state to easily reach the
conclusion that there is some important difference to be made between
both.

The important question, from our point of view, is "what is this
difference?"
