[Marxism] Yes, India-China were too far away
Fred Feldman:

Yes, they definitely were. Please take into account dominant winds,
etc. People weren't used to navigate at their will by those times.
They depended on multiple natural factors, the complexity of
guesssing the longitudes not being the lest important.
In fact, a Chinese fleet reached Mombassa. An Indian fleet
decided to return somewhere between today's Capetown and Rio de
Janiro, in the Atlantic sometime around 1450.
In both cases, a comparison between the difficulties and costs of the
journey and the scant results it was giving decided to put the
exploration to an end.
The definitive demonstration of these empiric facts is one of Jim
Blaut's best contributions both in _1492_ and _The colonizer's view
of the world_.
Of course, I am addressing this particular point. I am saying
nothing on Fred's remaining questions.
