Also, I think, the survivals of communal land ownership made the
internal development as well as relative isolation were obstacles to
the development from internal forces of capitalist production -- not
necessarily insuperable but serious.
But Kenneth Pomeranz points out that there was *more* private ownership of
land in China than in England at the very time capitalism was supposedly
being born in England. See "The Great Divergence".
