[Marxism] Re: Asiatic mode of production

>Read Perry Anderson's appendix on this in "Lineages of the Absolutist
State" or what Jim Blaut wrote in "Colonizer's Model of the World".
China
and Asia were feudal societies, just like Western Europe. Also, the MIA
introduction to "Preface to a Contribution to the Critique of Political
Economy" states that M & E dropped the idea of a distinct Asiatic mode
of
production after 1857, and kept four basic forms: tribal, ancient,
feudal,
and capitalist.

This concept can't yet be a dead dog if NYU's Department of East Asian
Studies offers it as one of eight courses, even allowing for its
possible fascination with the professor. Here is the short description
of the course followed by a syllabus.

The Asiatic Mode of Production: Theory & History
G33.2530. 4 points. Karl.
This course investigates aspects of the historical interpretation of
China and Japan in the 19th and 20th centuries, focusing on the genesis
and development of one of the most debated and enduring tropes of the
historiography of Asia: the Asiatic Mode of Production.

BTW, the MIA's brief note, based on an aside by Engels, claiming that
Marx and Engels "DROPPED" the notion of an Asiatic Mode of Production
is much too strong. Not bringing up the subject again hardly amounts to
"dropping." Here is Engels's statement and the MIA note.
