'Islamist' and 'Islamism' are commonly used to
describe 'political Islam' in my experience, but I
take on board your concern about the possibility that
the term can be misconstrued.

Contributor to this site, Ian Pace, pointed this out
in another post and suggested alternatives. One of
these is 'theocratic fundamentalism' which I think
does an adequate job.
