Re: [Marxism] A trailer: It's not the politics, it's the morals

Louis,

I didn't follow Dylan for years and came back to listening about three
albums ago. I didn't follow any American culture for a period of about 15
years -- just saw the peaks and Dylan stayed well off the horizon of the
Prince's, Madonna's, and Michael Jackson's. Showing up now and then as in
his amazing acceptance of the Oscar from Australia on live time connection
in which he said how amazed he was that Hollywood would give him that award
since it was about real people,or something like that. Love and Theft
convinced me that Dylan was "still alive" so I've paid more attention and
also he seems to have made himself a lot more visible lately.

But the more I've thought about it, especially given the posts that Lou and
others have made about Dylan's art and the Scorcese documentary, the more
it occurs to me that he really fled the commercial world, he was probably
the first to encounter it at such a personal level. As a poet, he writes
from a totally subjective space. If he allowed himself to have that space
altered, even by accepting provisionally the definitions or presuppositions
of the "media", the tentacular wiring of the commercial system itself, he
would have compromised and put in danger that space. So it gladdens me to
hear that you feel his religious period produced some great stuff. I must
admit, "you gotta serve somebody", which I've understood to be a Christian
song, can really get under your skin. But if its true then I say: Serve
the People!

Paul Dillon
