[Marxism] Re: farm-raised salmon is poisonous

Mike F, set this succinctly: examine the methods and species of fish
farming, if it's harmful, it should be stopped. Even the big pig
farms in the middle-South of the US *can be made* safe, and all the
waste recycled...but it's not *profitable* to do so. As mike pointed
out, a country like Costa Rica excels in small scale environmentally
friendly aquaculture. That's because they've chosen fresh water
species of fish and simply mimic their natural habit, on small
scales. Israel has also done this and some other countries.

I mentioned halibut as one salt water species that may make it in he
commercial aquaculture market and I hope they succeed. Salmon farming
is just dumb. There is nothing friendly about this industry or the
way they do it. It is introducing exotic species *to the detriment*
of native species.

Lastly, on sea-lice. We've noticed an increase in infestation of sea
life in wild caught salmon which *some* attribute to escapees from
the atlantic salmon pens in BC and Washington. There is no direct
evidence of this, however. Also, sea-lice are part of the natural
life cycle of salmon. What's happened, however, in the fish farms,
say, 5000 salmon get infected with the lice (it's VERY nasty,
grotesque looking insects that infest the animals flesh) since if one
gets infected, they all do, and it's simply cheaper for the "farmer"
to release the salmon than dispose of them, well, you get the picture.

Also, when I stated there were not wild salmon fishing fleets to my
knowledge in the East coast of Canada or the US, this doesn't mean
there are not wild Atlantic salmon, but the schools have been so
decimated that most of the fishing is sport fishing.
