Re: [Marxism] Dylan documentary
Er, the Beatles?
The Osmonds? Madonna?
I can't think of any popular artists that crossed all national and religious
boundaries with a social message at all. People from Russia to Lebanon to
Zaire all grooving to Bob Dylan, eh? Even if they did- its the message that
counts, and there are countless musicians and bands that have at least as
good politics as Bob Dylan ever did. How do you know that Nusrat Fateh Ali
Khan (who had a *religious* social message) does not have as many past and
present fans as Dylan?
I have nothing at all against Bob Dylan BTW- some of his music is great and
maybe a lot of the esteem fans have for him has to do with being around when
Dylan's music was first popular.
As for whether beatniks played banjos- I don't know. You'd need to ask the
banjo manufacturers.
PAUL DILLON WROTE:
Hmm, you can actually think of anyone in the last 40 years whose ability to
give voice to a social message that mobilized people regardless of their
race or religion or nationality in the way Dylan did for at least 10 years?
Don't think so, not even a close contender, all personal taste aside, this
isn't a matter of taste.
