[Marxism] Re: farm-raised salmon is poisonous
If you eat Salmon on the East Coast of the US, you are likely eating farmed
raised Atlantic salmon. There is no commercial wild Atlantic salmon fleet that
I'm aware of on the East coast of the US or Canada. Ask to see the box the
Salmon came in. If you've never eaten wild King (Chinook) salmon from the
Pacific Ocean, then you are missing one of natures true gifts.
In Alaska right now (I just go back from a fishing trip there, in fact) there is
a major battle between sport and commerical fishermen on one side and the mostly
Canadian salmon farming community on the other (with a small but significan
farmed salmon industry in Washington State). Farmed salmon in Alaska is
practically non-existant because it a threat both financially and biologically
to the wild salmon fishing industry.
Finacially because farmed salmon can be spawned and bread for less than
$1.50/lbls and commercial fishing prices have to be paid to the fishermen
(women, of which there are lot of it seems) of at leat $2.25/lbs and this is an
old number from before the increase in energy prices.
Financially AND biologically because the overly tamed farmed salmon
always...always excape and dilute through interbreeding with wild
stocks...create a lazy salmon with little fighting spirit, something critical
for the massive fishing/tourist industry along the Gulf of Alaska.
More and more escaped farmed salmon or interbred King/Atlantic salmon are
showing up, although I've personally never caught one, I'm told, but various
deckhands on salmon trips out of the Golden Gate or in Alaska.
Farmed salmon eat concentrated fish meal (eating fish that has to be
caught...commerically as it were!)of hearing and various 'by catch' from other
fishing industries. This concentrates the fish oils and 'blood line' of the
fish (the red meat often cut out of large fish) and is actually bad for the
fish, and you, because of it's concentration of mercury and PCBs.
Not all fish farming is bad. Fresh water cat fish, talipida and shrimp can be
healthy and commercially benefitial. But salmon cannot be, nor most salt water
aquaculture.

PS...I went on my trip with guys from work to Seward, Alaska, caught silver
salmon, halibut (up to 60lbs), black rock fish and ling cod. All yummy in my
tummy...
