Chavez Reaffirms Solidarity with US People
Caracas, Sep 4 (Prensa Latina) President Hugo Chavez reaffirmed
Sunday Venezuela´s solidarity with the people of the United States
and sent his condolences to those in pain due to the tragedy caused
by Hurricane Katrina.
Chavez recalled in his 233rd Al¢ Presidente TV program that the
Venezuelan Foreign Ministry addressed a note to the US embassy and to
the Governor of Lousiana Kathleen Blanco, reaffirming its offer to
send fuel, 120 million USD in humanitarian aid and 120 rescue
specialists to the affected areas.
Members from the Simon Bolivar Humanitarian Task Unit would provide
medical equipment and other supplies if the US government would
accept.
The Venezuelan statesman commented that Katrina was an announced
tragedy since it had earlier hit Florida hard and weather forecasts
indicated the storm had gained strength.
But the authorities -he added- did not take preventive measures, aid
came in five days later, no one was evacuated, and the powerful US
government lacked a rescue plan.
Chavez said from the Palacio de Miraflores that the tragedy,
particularly in New Orleans, has moved the people world wide and
called for an assessment, saying it is not a political attack against
anyone.
He called painful the fact that aid just started to reach the area
five days later while the president enjoyed long comfortable
vacations at his ranch.
The Venezuelan leader warned of the changes affecting the
environment, adding that the largest world contaminator, the US, has
refused to sign the Treaty of Kyoto
