I rather expect that the Democrats will gain much, at
least in the short-run, although certainly from any
particular merits of their own. They are still
perceived by most Americans as being THE "alternative"
to the GOP and are likely to benefit from the fact
at least for a short while. However, as we all
here know, and as more and more Americans
are beginning to realize they are not much of
an alternative, and in fact have for the most
part went along with the Bush Administration
on the Iraq war and many other issues.

Probably not, although they are quite capable of making
noises to give the appearance, but not the substance,
of making such shifts. I suspect that in 2008 we
will get Hilary or some other Democrat with a similar
outlook elected to the White House. It's part of our
job to make people realize that she is no alternative
to the GOP.
