As someone who is a member of the Scottish Socialist Party, I can tell you
that there are some serious drawbacks to a big tent Left alliance type
organisation. Though the SSP is a multi-tendency party, I wouldn't say that  
those
tendencies co-exist in a harmonious relationship. In fact a lot of  factional
animosity runs right the way through the SSP, which has only increased  since
Tommy Sheridan was removed as the leader last year in controversial
circumstances.

The SSP has been effective in many areas, of course, but ultimately, even
though it is a thoroughly democratic party, that old bugbear of the Left,  the
sect mentality, still manages to prevail.
