Don't think for a minute our government wasn't concerned about hurricanes.
Of course our government was concerned. On Monday, August 30, 2005, the
White House Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ), world famous for
their concern with global warming, opened the long awaited conference on
Cooperative Conservation in St. Louis. While Katrina savaged the Gulf
coast, CEQ director Jim Connaughton and Secretary of the Interior Norton
opened the conference session. As Katrina wiped out New Orleans' supply
of potable water, choked its sewers, cut its electric power to homes and
hospitals, the conference listened to speeches on "Cooperative
Conservation in Metropolitan Areas and Towns."
Donald Rumsfeld spoke at lunch, and that evening, as Gulfport, Biloxi
and neighboring small towns were simply flattened, cocktails were
enjoyed by all.
On Tuesday, while the levees holding back the flood waters of Lake
Pontchartrain and the 20 foot storm driven seas were breached, the
conference heard the mayors of Charlotte, Washington, D.C., and St.
Louis talked of "Cooperative Conservation as a way of doing business." A
reception was held that evening.
As flood waters rose in New Orleans cutting off the desperate poor from
any source of food and water, the Wednesday session ended with an
address from the Department of Commerce Secretary Gutierrez and closing
remarks by the Director of the CEQ, Jim Connaughton.
I'm sure the conference was a success even though its accomplishments
have not been announced.
