Thanks for this, Les. I've been wondering about the song.
Notice the several references to Chicago. This brings us back to
the political lead-up and follow-up to the event, i.e. the
beginning of another wave of a migration north. I don't remember
if I saw that in a synopsis of Barry's book on the flood or Greg
Palast's excellent piece on Huey Long. Anyway all that history
is important context for what's going to happen next -- and
whether Black, labor and other groups are going to step forward
and make our own demands about relief and reconstruction.
(By the way if anyone knows more about Long's supposed attack
on the oil companies pass it along; that's certainly relevant
given a) the nationwide price jack-up coming and sure to be
worsening soon and b) how recovery funds will go disproportionately
to the oil companies in the Gulf.)
