Re: [Marxism] Evaluating Solidarnosc 25 years later
The political side of their rightward-shifting economic views was
the notion of the "self-limiting revolution," which meant a refusal
to take power -- this despite the fact that Solidarnosc had voted at
its earliest national gatherings for workers to run society based
on the democratic councils they had organized. Or rather, not despite,
but because of this very fact: imperialism, through the Pope, AFL-CIO/
NED "democratic training," and most of all the promise/threat of
economic rewards from Western banks and corporations, encouraged this
notion of "self-limiting revolution."
But of course if you won't take power either the existing state will
keep it -- or in the case of Poland the workers' state will be
replaced by a restored capitalist state.
All this is EXTREMELY relevant today. The "self-limiting revolution"
is after all the same poison being peddled today by John Holloway
et al.
