That assault you describe (and you do cite some doozies) will only work,
I think, in the way high-school cheerleading works, to keep up the
morale of that portion of the u.s. public which offers hardcore support
to aggressive u.s. policy. I would say what the situation calls for is
simply to go on marshalling support around Sheehan, as is being done.
The rightwing cabal and its followers will be always with us; they are
part of the political climate. I think becoming obsessed with them will
(a) have little political effect and (b) distract activists and left
writers from more useful work.

I and a number of other people from Bloomington Illinois will be driving
over to Peoria tonight to join the vigil at the Federal courthouse
there. We'll see how all this plays in Peoria.
