Re: [Marxism] New coming scholarship?
There is a kind of method in this madness of Robertson's,
though,Michael. What we are seeing is the coming to the
surface of a tension between conservatives and their allies
among the radical market liberals.
While communism was around the conservatives were listened
to, but now market values are coming to the fore.
What Robertson cannot admit is that it is not Marxism that is
behind phenomena such as Big Brother. There the logic of the
market is holding full sway.
Meanwhile back in the academy the former practitioners of
ideology critique have become cheer leaders for popular
culture. John Hartley, former Dean of Creative Industries
here at QUT, can be taken as a paradigmatic instance. His
writing on the similarities between Big Brother and
Shakespeare is a classic example of the abandonment of not
only ideology critique but the refusal of any notion of
aesthetic or moral value.
My own feeling is that we Marxists ignored moral and
aesthetic values too much and put all our eggs in the
ideology critique basket. Consequently we have little to
say when as in Australia at the moment, the Right is leading
an attack against post modernism in the schools.
What we have been very slow to react to has been the
development of the schlock jock mentality among academics,
where objective critique made way for market hype.
regards
Gary
