Yes. You are right that my formulation was (or tended to be)
tautological. Probably the proper way to do this would be to give
substantial excerpts from the relevant sections of Gould's book.
Incidentally, the first half of the book is firstrate intellectual
history. Gould is a great historian, in addition to (or independently
of) his statis as a biologist.
