[Marxism] Peak Oil
I know peak oil has been discussed previously on the list and that
interested me to attend a presentation by Prof. Richard Heinberg, and read his
book, "The Party's Over - Oil, War and the Fate of Industrial Societies." He
makes a convincing case that world oil production is about to peak probably
within a few years, leading to oil price spikes. Indeed we already see demand
pushing the price over $60 a barrel.
I think this will almost certainly lead to a capitalist economic collapse
on the order of the 1930's with the only capitalist "solution" being more oil
wars and probably a rightist dictatorship of some kind. What do other people
think about this?
To me it's ominous, because there is little in the way of working class
revolutionary leadership in the world. The one exception would be Cuba - and
maybe Venezuela and other countries in South America can find their way forward
to socialism.
For sure here in the U.S. workers are going to need some examples to help
change their outlook. Currently, only handfuls of workers in the U.S. have any
idea that there is any alternative to capitalism and imperialism.
