Rubinelli is his usual all-knowing and all-uncomprehending self.  (I was
so  relieved to find out he was just good old Schanoes.  I was really
thinking he had multiplied.)

But just to be clear my point in comparing the now-spreading story of
the British government's special advance notice to Israel re the attack
and the stories that have spread across the United States, and the world
in fact, about Israelis and/or Jews in general being told to stay home
from their jobs in the World Trade Center before September 11.

I'm not suggesting that there was any conspiracy involved in the
development of the two stories, but I also don't think they are
accidental.  The arising of stories pointing to a special position of
privilege and authority of the Jews and Israel in this situation is in
the nature of conspiracy theory, Jews being the ultimate and original
cabal.

And yes, I do expect more stories like this will develop and no number
of denials will be able to prevent their spread. Note that the response
of the conspiracy-believers is to say, Well, of course they would say
it.  The denial of the unconfirmed story makes up for the proof that is
lacking.  And so it will go

By the way, I reject the idea that conspiracy theorists are paranoid, or
if they are, their paranoia comes right out of the heart of the way
capitalism works.  Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not
plotting against you.

On the left, the conspiracy ideas are an easy way out of hard debates.
You don't have to fight the patriotic wave.  You don't have to defend
the oppressed nations.  You can just say the leaders have betrayed "us
English," and that they even protected the fucking Israelis when they
should have been putting "their own" first.  Easier argument and more
self-comforting, but it can't beat them because it half-joins them.
