[I wrote the first post in a rush. Here's a better short review.]
Robert Pape, in Dying to Win: The Strategic Logic of Suicide Terrorism, shows
rather conclusively that suicide bombers are drawn from those countries where
the US and its allies have had boots on the ground since 1990. Analyzing every
suicide attack since 1995, he shows that, for example, there has never been a
suicide attack by an Iranian. This includes attacks against Israel.
Pape shows that al Qaeda is attacking the US and its allies not because they
are jealous of Western freedom, democracy, materialism, or other liberal
values, or because they have a pan-Islamic vision of world domination, but
because they want Western forces off their land. That's why they only target
those countries that have troops in their countries, the most dramatic examples
so far being the United States, Spain, and Britain. This raises the very real
possibility that countries such as Denmark are next on the schedule of attacks.
