[Marxism] Who is Michael Parmly?



The Miami Herald is reporting that Mr. Michael Parmly is
Slated to replace James Cason as Chief of the US Interests
Section in Havana. Here's the story in the Herald today:

Here isa brief briography of the individual who the Herald
is saying will replace James Cason as head of the US
Interests Section in Havana. Mr Parmly played a key role as
part of the US delegation to the UN Human Rights Commission
effort against the Cuban government in 2001.

Mr. Michael Parmly

Michael Eleazar Parmly is a Career Member of the Senior
Foreign Service, a veteran of 26 years at State.

Mr. Parmly has served the bulk of his career in Western and
Eastern Europe, most recently in the Balkans, where he was
Deputy Chief of Mission and Charge d'Affaires, a.i. in
Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina 1996-1997.

Three years as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for
Democracy, Human Rights and Labor, during which time he
served as Acting Assistant Secretary for six months in
2001. At DRL, he focussed on Europe, Africa, Latin America
and South Asia. He recently returned from several months as
the State rep on the Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT)
in Kandahar, Afghanistan.

His earlier overseas tours have included Political
Minister-Counselor at Embassy Paris, Political Counselor at
Embassy Bucharest and at the US Mission to the European
Communities, and tours in Morocco and Spain.

Mr Parmly also served in the Operations Center at State, in
the Bureau of Intelligence and Research (INR) at the State
Department, and as Office Director for Northern Europe in
the Bureau of European Affairs.

Prior to joining State, Mr. Parmly was a Peace Corps
volunteer (1973-75) in Bucaramanga, Colombia.

He holds two Masters degrees from the Fletcher School of
Law and Diplomacy, where he specialized on Political and
Economic Development and on International Business Law, and
a Bachelors from St. Joseph's College in Philadelphia,
where he focused on International Relations and Latin
American Studies. He is married to the former
Marie-Catherine Schutte, of Geneva, Switzerland. They have
two children, a daughter and a son. An avid swimmer and
bicyclist, Mr. Parmly also enjoys classical music.
