[Marxism] Re: To Carlos (2)
On reflection, Carlos's comments seem even weirder than I had thought.
Perhaps I gave him too much credit.
The son of a wealthy landowner, Fidel Castro, led a movement that
overthrew the government of Fulgencio Batista, who was considered
African by the standards of the U.S. influenced Cuban society.
At one time Batista was favored by the Cuban Communist Party.* It is
quite possible that the Carloses of that day would have denounced the
white-skin privilege of any "European" left-wing Cuban who refused to
support him.
Brian Shannon
*After the new Cuban constitution is established in 1940. Batista is
elected in 1940 as the constitutional president. The communist party
made up part of the coalition that brought Batista to power. Batista
described himself as a "progressive socialist." He used the communist
party to take control of the labor unions.
