Wasn't Hitchens in the British SWP? I read somewhere that he once hawked the
paper on streetcorners. Also, that Hitchens had written the preface/intro to
Deutscher's trilogy of Trotsky in the NLR edition (not the newly reissued
trilogy, though).
At http://www.marxists.de/culture/media/cockhitch.htm you'll find an
article on Christopher Hitchens and Alexander Cockburn which briefly
goes into their pre-history before they decamped to the States. The
article was written in 1998, before Hitchens' total degeneration into
pseudo-leftist pro-imperialism.
Just for the record, Hitchens was a member of the British International
Socialists, the forerunners of the British SWP, while he was a student
and for a short time afterwards about 30 years ago. He dropped out about
1975.
