Survivors of US Terror Victims Speak Out in Havana:

Forum Hears from Brother of Spanish Journalist Killed by US in Iraq,
and Daughter of a Cuban 5 Anti-terrorist Agent

by HAROLDO ROMERO PÃ?REZ

How could I not be in Havana today, if those who killed my brother are
the same ones who protect bombers of civilian airplanes like the
international terrorist Luis Posada Carriles? How could I not be here,
if there is a government leading a war against terrorÂ?the United
StatesÂ?that is both committing terror and protecting terrorists?

This is what Javier Couso Permuy, brother of the Spanish journalist,
Jose Couso, killed by US troops in Iraq, said on Saturday at the
International Conference against Terrorism, for Truth and Justice, held
in Havana with the presence of Cuban leader Fidel Castro.

Jose was deliberately shot, said Javier, by US soldiers on April 8,
2003, in Bagdad, in an operation against independent journalists
reporting the brutal invasion of Iraq.

Couso gave details of how the murder of his brother, among other crimes
against press workers Iraq, was a directed aggression to intimidate
those who did not praise the purported war against terrorism that today
Washington is imposing on the world. None of the perpetrators of that
murder or any of their superiors are in a jail or awaiting sentence, but
free, he denounced.

He concluded his words by describing a visit he made to the ill-fated
city of Fallujah in Iraq, with half a million inhabitants and now 70
percent destroyed by the American invaders, and which he described as
Â?the Guernica of our times.Â?

One of the most moving addressesÂ?generating the longest applause at the
conference in HavanaÂ?was that of Irma Gonzalez, daughter of Rene
Gonzalez, one of the five Cuban political prisoners in jail in the
United States. She recalled her childhood in Miami with her father, who
was then monitoring the activities of terrorist Cuban-American
organizations in South Florida.

All the anti-Cuba hate of the US government has turned against our
family, she regretted, citing how her little 7-year old sister Ivette
and her mother Olga have now been kept from traveling to the US to visit
Rene in prison for five years.

Irma Gonzalez contrasted the punishment that her family is receiving
from US authorities because of her fatherÂ?s anti-terrorist struggle with
the kind of treatment that the Bush administration is according
self-admitted terrorist Luis Posada Carriles, whose extradition is being
demanded by Venezuela in connection with the bomb attack against a Cuban
passenger plane in 1976 that killed all 73 people on board.

The young Cuban ended her statement by reading a message sent by her
father to the Havana meeting against terrorism on behalf of all five
Cuban anti-terrorist fightersÂ?Gerardo Hernandez, Fernando Gonzalez,
Ramon Labanino and Antonio GuerreroÂ?in prison in the United since 1998.
